Software Engineer IV (San Jose)

Looking for a strong, architect level system administrator specializing in Linux. This candidate should not only be able to maintain today’s infrastructure but guide the lab to a more scalable and efficient future. In essence, this candidate would be THE technical backstop for all lab services and engineering issues

Responsibilities/Expectations:

  • Define the vision and path for lab processes and infrastructure
  • Mentor the less senior members to execute on this vision
  • Monitor and provide guidance on networking, SAN, and system architecture
  • Define and follow standards and best practices for server and operating system builds.
  • Create and maintain detailed up-to-date technical documentation
  • Perform troubleshooting and problem resolution activities with other support teams and engineers.
  • Produce Root Cause Analysis findings that focus on recommendations to learn from and avoid problem recurrence
  • Respond to end-user help requests and trouble tickets
  • Always look for opportunities to automate or streamline current lab processes, reinvent the wheel!

Knowledge Skills: • BSCS or equivalent

  • 8+ years experience as a Sr. Linux Administrator
  • Must possess strong oral and written communication skills with a proven track record of working effectively across large organizations.
  • Enthusiasm for helping a team set and achieve goals
  • Working experience with Mysql and/or Postgresql, especially related to operational support (replication, backup, etc)
  • Working knowledge of networking issues, physical layer and Layer 3
  • Strong knowledge in Perl, and Bash
  • Knowledge of PXE booting PC’s over the network
  • Strong Knowledge in Redhat Enterprise Linux, RPM build environment, Shell scripting, networking, RAID management, kickstart installations and server administration
  • Experience in High performance computing, benchmarking, and kernel tuning
  • Experience with various hardware components including storage and networking
  • Strong problem solving skills: innovation, collaboration, analysis, inductive reasoning
  • Experience administering Linux in a production networked environment
  • Familiarity with server virtualization technologies (Vmware)* Excellent customer focus, team integration, and positive attitude
  • Capable of managing multiple projects and integrating new project requirements effectively
  • Experience managing servers remotely in a distributed environment
  • Hands-on experience with large storage systems, especially EMC
  • Experience with SAN environment, especially Brocade
  • Expert level knowledge of DNS, DHCP, and TCP/IP networking
  • Strong experience operating and troubleshooting common applications such as apache, tomcat, sendmail, postfix, tinyDNS, BIND
  • Experience with network management tools including SNMP, IDS/IPS
  • Familiar with Windows and Linux integration (LDAP/AD, DNS, SAMBA)
  • OS Imaging deployment a strong plus
  • Experience defining policies and administering enterprise level production backup software (Networker preferred) for physical and virtual servers
